Hiding Behind Masks or Self Expression?

When performing, Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun often wear masks. However, the reason they do this is not just out of being insecure. Tyler and Josh both believe the reason for going to see a show is not to see the artist's face, but to hear the words they sing with passion. The masks support the idea that you should listen to the words they sing. Tyler Joseph, the lead singer, doesn't want his fans to look at his face as much as he wants them to listen to his music. His goal was to have his words mean something to people in the way music speaks to him. After all, you don't buy an album to listen to the artist's face.

Not only were the masks a symbol of what they wanted to happen, but they created something impossible to forget. Because who wears a mask on stage singing and dancing around? Twenty One Pilots do. Seeing someone on stage with a mask is bound to grab your attention, where you can then have your own connection of wearing a mask, whether it be you being insecure, or maybe your more like Tyler Joseph when he says: “[We’re] trying to create something that’s a bit more faceless, that can represent a group of people or have people relate to it.”
